ABOUT OUR FINNS
Andrew built the original Vanguard Finn that set the class standard for almost twenty years. Since then he has added 20 years of experience and is now building the ultimate modern Finn dinghy.
Designed in 1949 by Rickard Sarby, the Finn was first used at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and it has been used at every Olympic Games since then. A blend of a popular club boat and Olympic legend, and the taskmaster of many top sailors, the Finn is renowned for tactical as well as technical singlehanded sailing.
Strict class rules and measurement keep the class strictly one design, and the Finn was the first class to use a pendulum test to control the removal of weight from the ends. This ‘swing test’ method has since become the standard method of weight-distribution testing for many other classes.
Our hull and deck are built with Vinylester resin, which has elongation properties approaching epoxy for heat and impact resistance. Your boat will remain fair and stiff for much longer than a traditional polyester boat. For more information, contact designer Larry Lemieux:
